Victorians Across America- Design No. 126 HISTORY: Oak Bluffs is a small community of diminutive cottages on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. It was founded in 1835 as a campground, originally called Wesleyan Grove. There were no cottages, only tent platforms used by the Methodist church for a summer camp meeting site. Eventually, about 1,000 tiny Carpenter Gothic cottages were built on the platforms in irregular rows around a central preaching area, but only about 320 remain. A typical cottage was a story and a half, and no larger than 12x20 feet. Most lacked kitchens (because there was a communal meal tent) but by the turn of the century, kitchens and bathrooms were added to the backs of most dwellings.
